The Dendrobates auratus "Rio Cascajal" is a popular and stunning morph of the green-and-black poison dart frog, known for its high-contrast coloration and relatively shy behavior that becomes bolder with age.

Key Characteristics

Coloration: Juveniles are typically a muted gray or bluish-gray color. As they mature, they develop a striking pattern of creamy bluish-white to crisp white markings on a black-bronze to brownish-black body. The bold adult coloration makes this morph highly desirable in the dart frog hobby.

Size: As with other Dendrobates auratus morphs, adults are medium-sized frogs, reaching approximately 1 to 1.7 inches (2.5 to 4.2 cm) in snout-vent length.

Origin: This specific locale is native to the shores of the Rio Cascajal in Panama. (Note: This differs from the "Pena Blanca" morph, which originates from Guatemala).

Behavior: The "Rio Cascajal" is generally a moderately shy frog, though it tends to become bolder and more active with age and exposure to its environment. They are diurnal and can be kept in groups in a large enough enclosure with ample hiding spots, though some female aggression may occur.

Toxicity: Like all captive-bred dart frogs, "Rio Cascajal" frogs lose their toxicity in captivity because their diet lacks the specific wild insects that produce the poison.

 Habitat and Care (Captivity) Their care requirements are standard for Dendrobates auratus and are manageable for beginner hobbyists.  Enclosure: A bioactive vivarium, at least 10 gallons per frog, is ideal, providing plenty of live plants, leaf litter, and climbing areas. An 18x18x18 terrarium is recommended for a group.

Temperature: They thrive in standard room temperatures, ideally between 72–78°F (22–26°C), and temperatures consistently above 80°F (27°C) should be avoided.

Humidity: High humidity levels (70-100%) are necessary and can be maintained through regular or automated misting systems.

Diet: A diet of small, live, non-toxic insects such as flightless fruit flies, springtails, and 1/8-inch crickets is recommended. Food should be regularly dusted with a quality vitamin/calcium supplement.

Handling: Handling should be minimized due to their permeable, sensitive skin.
