The Dendrobates auratus "Ancon Hill" is a specific color morph of the green and black poison dart frog, native to the rainforests near Ancon Hill in Panama City, Panama.

Characteristics

Coloration: Primarily very dark green or black bodies with metallic light green dots or small, circular blotches. Size: A medium-sized dart frog, generally reaching up to 1.5 inches or larger as adults. Females tend to be slightly larger than males. 

Behavior: Considered relatively shy, but hardy. They are a terrestrial species (foraging on the forest floor) but are also good climbers, using small discs on their toes to navigate vegetation. They are diurnal, or active during the day. They do well in groups provided there are ample hiding spots. Toxicity: In the wild, they secrete toxins through their skin as a defense mechanism, acquired from their diet of specific ants and other small insects. Captive-bred frogs, lacking this specific diet, are not poisonous.

Habitat and Care (in Captivity)

Terrarium: Requires a tropical vivarium setup with plenty of hiding places and plants. A general rule is 1 square foot of space per frog.

Temperature: A temperature range of 70-80°F (21-27°C) is ideal.

Humidity: Requires high humidity, ranging from 40-70%. Automatic misting systems or daily spraying can help maintain this level. Diet: In captivity, they are typically fed small insects like flightless fruit flies, which should be dusted with nutritional supplements.

Breeding: They are relatively easy to breed in captivity. Females lay clutches of 3-10 eggs in coco huts or under leaf litter, and males will transport the resulting tadpoles to a small body of water.

 The "Ancon Hill" is a popular morph among frog enthusiasts and is considered a good choice for beginners due to its hardiness. It is important not to mix different species or even different color morphs in the same enclosure to prevent stress and potential health issues.
